St Athan Community Council – Wards Explained

St Athan Community Council is spilt into three wards, these are

St Athan (VAO) – which covers the village of St Athan
As of January 2026, has 1393 registered voters and is represented by 8 ward councillors
The Polling Station is at St Athan Library

Flemingston (VBO) – which covers the housing surrounding the old RAF Base including Flemingston & New Barn
As of January 2026, has 1739 registered voters and is represented by 3 ward councillors
The Polling Station is at St Athan Golf Club

Gileston (VCO) – which includes West Aberthaw along with Gileston
As of January 2026, has 146 registered voters and is represented by 1 ward councillor
The Polling Station is at St Athan Library

When elections are held you vote for your Ward not the Community Council as whole so if a by-election is called between the main elections only registered voters in that ward would be able to vote.
For example, if a vacancy exists for St Athan Ward only registered voters in that Ward can vote for the new councillor.  Registered Voters in Flemington and Gileston Wards would be ineligible to vote.

Community Councillors are elected for a five-year term, and elections are held at the same time as the County Council election. The next full election for the Community Council will be May 2027.

If a vacancy occurs during this time, it can be filled via Co-option or By-election. By-elections are only called if 10 registered voters request this to the County Council once the notice of the vacancy is given otherwise the vacancy is filled via co-option.
