Pre-Application Consultation: Proposed 132kV Electricity Substation at Bro Tathan

Residents may wish to be aware of a Pre-Application Consultation now underway in relation to a proposal by Welsh Ministers for the demolition of existing buildings and structures and the installation of a 132kV electricity substation on land at Bro Tathan, St Athan. The future planning application is intended to be submitted to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

According to the consultation material, the proposed substation would be built on land within the Bro Tathan East / Y Dwyrain area. Supporting documents describe the site as previously developed brownfield land and explain that the substation is intended to transform high-voltage electricity into lower-voltage power for distribution across the wider Bro Tathan site. The supporting letter states that this infrastructure is intended to provide electricity capacity for existing and future development within the business park.

The submitted information says the proposal includes demolition works, removal of hazardous materials and foundations, installation of the substation compound, transformers, control and switchgear rooms, security fencing, drainage works and landscaping. The documents also refer to an attenuation basin and replacement tree planting as part of the wider landscaping and drainage proposals.
